How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes in the House: 3 Tricks That Actually Work

It doesn’t seem fair that mosquitoes can get inside your house. Aren’t they supposed to stay outside? When we humans venture outside, we know we are running the risk of a mosquito encounter. Inside, however, we are supposed to be safe.

Only the mosquitoes have broken that deal. They venture indoors when they have the opportunity, and suddenly not even your own home is safe from these annoying little pests.

It’s time to fight back. Rather than just flailing away with your bare hands, trying hopelessly to strike one down, you need to deploy a strategy. We have a massive brain power advantage over the mosquito, and it’s about time we use it.

So, this post will break down three helpful tricks to get rid of mosquitoes in your home. You might have to experiment with these tactics to figure out which one works best in your situation, but in the end, the mosquitoes won’t stand a chance.

Trick #1 - Target and Eliminate Breeding Grounds

Although it might seem like it at times, mosquitoes don’t just appear out of nowhere. In order to breed and spread, mosquitoes require the right conditions. Specifically, they need some stagnant water to reproduce and thrive. Surprisingly, even a tiny amount of water can be enough to make this happen.

So, the first step is to make sure you aren’t presenting mosquitoes with the right conditions to breed in or around your home. Take some time to explore your property and look for any stagnant water that could be causing the problem. Even something like a faucet that leaks slightly could create a small bit of standing water. Or, it could be a potted plant that is getting a little too much water. Whatever the case, find any standing water and clean it up regularly. This step alone will go a long way toward improving your mosquito situation.

As you do your investigating, make sure to check the areas in and around the home that aren’t often seen. You probably don’t have mosquitoes growing in plain sight, but they might be developing in dark corners before flying around and disrupting your daily life.

Trick #2 - Use Quality Indoor Traps

Interrupting the breeding cycle is a huge step in the right direction. But your job isn’t done. The next step is to trap and kill the adult mosquitoes that are already flying around the house.

There are a number of different indoor insect trap products on the market for this purpose. You’ll want to look specifically at products that are designed for indoor use. Sticky traps are a simple and affordable starting point. These are traps that have a sticky surface and attract the mosquitoes with a chemical bait. Once the mosquito hits the sticky trap, it’ll be unable to get away.

For perhaps an even more effective solution, look at carbon dioxide traps. These tools are designed to mimic human breath to attract the mosquitoes. Then, once they are close, a small fan in the unit sucks them in. This option is best in a part of the house where the noise of the fan won’t be bothersome, such as in the basement.

Trick #3 - Make Your Home Harder to Access

The last step in the process of winning the war against mosquitoes in your home is improving your defense. In other words, you are going to make it harder for mosquitoes to get inside in the first place. You can treat mosquitoes like burglars - if you make life just a little bit harder on them, they’ll likely give up and look for an easier target.

As a starting point, seal up any openings that are currently inviting mosquitoes in. Holes or tears in window screens are a great example. Either repair or replace these screens so mosquitoes can’t fly right in. The same goes for openings around doors. If you can see light through the gap around the door, add weather stripping to seal it up. This is an inexpensive step that will yield great results.

You can also make it harder for mosquitoes to get around within the house if they do gain access. Mosquitoes are rather poor flyers, a fact that you can use to your advantage. By using fans, such as ceiling fans or just an oscillating fan that blows around the room, you’ll be making their lives quite difficult. Most likely, they won’t be able to stay in the air and find their next victim if the air is moving around.

Start Making Progress Today

If you learn as much as you can about how to get rid of mosquitoes, can you completely eliminate the possibility that a mosquito will ever enter your home again? No, probably not. These little pests are crafty, and one or two are likely to find their way in despite your best efforts.

But that’s okay. Mosquitoes are really only a problem when the population grows. By utilizing the tricks discussed above, and by employing the right products, you can make sure that your home remains the comfortable, peaceful retreat that you and your family deserve.
